Free Writing Research Paper: Religious Influence in U.S. Politics

            My topic for the research paper will evaluate the religious influences in U.S. politics, specifically after the attack on America on September 11, 2001. My working thesis statement is as follows: The political structure of the U.S. government has always faced religious influence, mainly through its foundation on Christian values, but has slowly incorporated foreign religions into shaping our nation into the country we reside in today. Most prominently is the growing influence of Islam through the immense immigration of Muslim practicing individuals after the war in Iraq.

            The sources I have already found establish the existence of religious influence within the U.S. government and political parties, along with the questioning of the government establishment of a state religion. I expect I will need several primary and secondary sources that depict or respond to such court cases and events that hold religious motives. The ability to find articles on events that changed or challenged government policies will strengthen my paper by revealing the religious influence no matter what the outcome may have been.

            In looking for creditable sources I expect to find opinionated articles that may only tell of the event or strew the event to appear as something else happened. In which further research will needed to be done to discover the reality of elections, cases, and decisions in time of war to find the true motives in these events. In addition, I expect to find multiple sources analyzing the religious influences on the national government following the Attack on America on September 11, 2001.
